A Better Audio Experience

Challenge:

A high performance Audio customer of ours was looking for a way to improve their audio sound quality over Ethernet, by streaming sound to multiple speakers in the home. Since traditional Ethernet is a “best effort” protocol, one major drawback to overcome when streaming real-time media is the ability to always deliver audio samples and video frames in sync and on time due to the lack of clocking and synchronizations capabilities and guaranteed quality of service.

Solution:

We introduced our customer to a new technology called Ethernet AVB, a new low cost IEEE standard for transporting uncompressed audio files over Cat-5 cabling while ensuring the synchronized playback. AVB achieves this with a timing mechanism for synchronization, bandwidth reservations that ensure “on time delivery”, a low-jitter master clock, guaranteed low latency and dedicated raw bandwidth to support a high channel count through each AVB port.

Benefits:

Our Ethernet AVB switch allowed our customer to reduce the cost of their system by using lower cost 10/100 switches and magnetics rather than GE and extensive software.

In-Car Entertainment

Challenge:

A major tier one automotive suppliers was looking for the best way to track the playback settings of the car's stereo (infotainment) system. With the multiple audio sources available such as CD ( Audio, MP3), IPOD, USB Sticks, AM, FM, Satellite, etc. available on modern systems the numbers of settings needing to be stored is very large. The playback configuration gets updated constantly as new songs are played, different input devices are used, volume and equalization settings are updated. The ability to store this information in standard flash and EEPROM is problematic due to the wear out mechanisms and write speeds of those devices.

Solution:

We introduced our customer to a technology called F-RAM. It provides the benefits of RAM and the non-volatility of ROM into a single package.

Benefits:

By offering 10,000 times greater write endurance and 500 times the write speed of an EEPROM, F-RAM gave our customer the ability to quickly write to a memory location as many times as needed. Since F-RAM is non-volatile, it does not lose its data content when power is removed (i.e. turning off the ignition), and data can be quickly stored to a memory location. We provided a cost effective solution that solved the problem and has given our customer a significant edge in performance over the competition.

Wireless Enterprise Connectivity

Focus establishes the relationships with our customers to form partnerships with our manufacturers. Eight years ago, when one of our major Enterprise Communication companies was looking to partner with a silicon vendor we helped them to make that happen. They were not just looking for any silicon vendor, but one that was willing to work together with their design team, integrating unique “award winning” features that would differentiate their product far beyond that of their competition. Focus helped to facilitate that relationship and form a “virtual team” between the two companies, that kept this Communication company in a “leadership” position in the Enterprise Wireless space. Their competitors cannot touch their robust performance in a multi client Enterprise environment. Although for confidentiality reasons, we cannot name names, we are honored to work with a top notch engineering team whose creativity and technical expertise has provided their users with a seamless wireless experience that will continue to keep their product “best in class”.
